One of my favorite movies is The Bind Side. The Blind Side is a great example of Bias, Prejudice and Oppression. The movie is about an African American boy in high school. He does not have a family at the beginning of the movie. He has a mother but the mother was never there for him. He moved to one friends house to the streets. He went to a private school because the school wanted him on there sports team. A wealthy family took him in and started treating him like he was their son. There was a lot of people who were rude to the whole family. They were rude because the wealthy family was white and the boy was black. The family friends thought they were doing it for publicity.
If you ever watch this movie you will see a lot of bias, prejudice and oppression.
One of the biggest moment that I remember was when the teachers were in the teacher lounge talking about how "stupid" he was. That he will not be able to play sports because people like him never do good in school. Those teachers were not treating him equally because he was a large black student in a heavily white populated white private school. They categorized him at stupid because of where he came from...the projects (low income housing).
During this movie I felt so many emotions. I was sad, happy, and proud just to name a few.
I am not sure if I would be able to change this situation. I could try to help it by educating those who live in the projects to they can reach their full potential. Those children in the projects are not stupid they just are not privileged enough to have effective teachers and also effective supplies because of the schools budget.
I loved watching The Blind Side. It is definitely a movie that brings out many different feelings. I loved how the Tuohy family brought Michael Oher into their home and did not let other people's opinions dictate how they were going to treat him. I loved how Leigh Anne Tuohy stood up for Michael just like he was her own child. We need more families like this in the world.
ReplyDeleteHi Cheryl,
ReplyDeleteThe Blind Side movie is one of my favorite. The teacher behavioral was totally unfair and unkind. They were only looking at skin color that led them to assume that Michael was stupid. I think with their attitude and behavioral they should have focus on Michael family background. You would think because he attended a private school, he would have been treated fair and teachers would be able to mentor and coach him there than he had received in public school. Somehow Michael begins to believe he was stupid. He had been insulted in this way often enough by people who are supposed to know things about a child's intelligence.
Hi Cheryl,
ReplyDeleteThe Blind Side is such a great movie!! This movie is a great example of Personal Side of Bias, Prejudice, and Oppression. This movie being a true event; its great there is still good hearted people out there who are willing to help those in need. Great Post!
I think that this post is interesting. The movie focuses on one example of a boy negatively impacted by racial predjudice and lower socio-economic status. While I think its great that you want to help those in "the projects reach their highest potential", I think that simply not judging ANYONE will be a great start. Though I did not grow up in the "projects", I know that not everyone that grows up their feels as if they are hopeless. Further more, I do not think it is the kids who need help realizing their potential but everyone else. I think that anyone born in the world has dreams that they entertain in their quiet time; its the outslide world that has a hard time allowing these dreams to thrive.
ReplyDeleteCheryl,
ReplyDeleteI do remember that movie and you are right about the different bias that was shown in that movie. It also shows you that a black guy is big and strong he must be good in sports don't matter about his academic work. It was nice to see a family nice enough to take in Michael Oher.
I really love this movie!! It put a real life spot light on different issues including racism, but I truly felt this movie was about helping a child who was less fortunate. There were plenty of racial issues also.
