Practicing Awareness of Microaggressions

I did not hear any microaggressions out in public this week. I think the reason for that is I did not go out in public much. I went to work but I did not hear my co-workers and parents make any comments that pertained to microaggressions. Other then work I ran to the store just to pick up a few things but did not hear or pay attention to what anyone was saying because I was in and out with in 10 minutes. Life of a graduate student is not being able to go out during the week and sometimes even on weekends, at least that is my life. I was able to hear microaggressions on the TV shows that I watched.

The first microaggression that I heard was: "Wow would of never thought Jesús sister would be such a math wiz." That was from the TV show The Fosters. An ex-girl friend of Jesús was talking to Jesús sister. Jesús is not the smartest in the TV show. Though I do not know what kinds of ism that comment it would be it is a microaggressions. The ex-girlfriend is comparing the siblings, basically saying that she was shock that one of them is smart, though she did not mean it in that content but it could have been perceived in that content. Another comment I heard on TV is "You and your people are always smart". That comment was made on the TV show Golden Girls. Which I believe the producers had it Sophia say that comment because it fits her character. It is who she is. The comment was directed to a Chinese doctor.
I did not feel anything really with the first example I gave for microaggression. I felt like I was more excited that I was able to pick up that it could be a microagression. When given this assignment I did not think I would hear any and was scared on what to write in my blog. To be honest when I heard the second example I laughed. You would have to know Sophia on what it was funny. You would also have to see her daughters face when she said that. Her daughter was very embarrassed that her mom said that and also that her mom kept talking about how his people are always so smart. Though in real life it would not be funny it was meant to be funny in this show.
My experience with this assignment truly brought a light in my eyes that microaggression happens everywhere. We all as a society just choose not to listen. I will not try to become more aware of what I say to people.

  1. Cheryl,

As I read your post I thought it was interesting when you talked about not going out much during the week and getting to watch television! I on the other hand have hardly been home. With teaching, schooling, family activities and children activities I probably did not watch thirty minutes of television this week. I might have been just a little bit jealous of you this week!! I would like to share one microaggression I heard one of my students tell another student. There was a girl who wanted to play with these other two children. The boy said to this girl "you cannot play with us because you are too small." The girl he said this to came up to me and told me the boy was being rude. I agreed that wasn't nice to say but right away I thought about microaggressions.

    2. I agree with @Cgriswold! I have like 3 weeks worth of television on my DVR, I don't have time to watch anything. I was going to try to sneak some in this weekend, we will see if it works. Could what you said be an example of a microaggression, that , Grad students don't get out much? Lol. I am familiar with Golden Girls and they are always making off color remarks, or microaggressions. I think it is funny because we know people that do that in real life. Sometimes my mouth flies open at the kinds of things I see on even commercials!

  2. Hi Cheryl,

I had conversations with various people this week as I cleared out from the Blizzard of 2015. We got 33 inches of snow. After this assignment I realized that microaggresion happens all the time and even on TV. I have seen plenty of episodes of the Golden Girls to know Sophia's character. Though it's a clear example of the embarrassment and uncomfortable emotions others have regarding the situation. The character was completely oblivious to the microaggression taking place and it was completely unintentional. She was in her mind trying to compliment the other character but the way it was perceived was completely different. I would like others to learn about microaggression and it be in the form of a training. Once others know about microaggression, hopefully it will help us to have a more intimate connected relationship with others and be more respectful and open minded when communicating with others.

  3. This week, I have gained a great deal of knowledge of microaggressions and the intent and impact of how they are experienced by those who unknowingly commits them and those who receive them. In addition, I learned how we can interrupt our own use of harmful language and actions as well as skills to intervene when we witness microaggressions happening around us.

  4. Cheryl,
Thanks for sharing your post. I just gained so much knowledge on Microaggressions myself this week. I will try to avoid in using Microaggressions myself in the future. I have witnessed a lot of Microaggressions growing up in my lifetime.

  5. Cheryl,

I notice many microaggressions on TV. I feel as though they are portrayed as humor in so many instances, but what's more is how many people find them funny.
