Communication Evaulation

This week I had a chance to take assignments to see where I am on communication. I feel I scored very well and agree with what the scores describe me as. I also had the opportunity to have two people take the same evaluations on me. The scores they came up with on me were very similar to what I can up with. I was surprised that they were very similar. People always have their own opinion so I figured they would think of me differently then I think of myself. 

The first insight that I have had this week is who I really am when it comes to communication. I am happy with who I am but I also learned what I can work on to become a better communicator. The second insight that I had was I need to communicate as I know what I am saying. If I show any signs of nervousness I will not be taken as serious as I would with confidence. 

I do feel like I communicate differently to people for different culture and groups. I feel I communicate in a way that they understand. Such as a work meeting I am going to communicate professionally but with my friends I communicate in a fun way. I also use to work with a agency that had a majority of African Americans. I feel I started talking as they do when I am around them.I also communicate differently to people that I do not know. I treat and talk to them the way I would want to be treated since I do not know them. Another group I talk to differently is my students. I use words they can understand and most of the time it is in a calm positive voice.  

I feel you have to talk to different people differently. As I said you are not going to talk to your friends as you would talk in a work meeting. You just have to use your best judgement on how to talk to who.

For this assignment I watched the show Secrets and Lies. It is a show that I had recorded because the previews looked good. I just did not have the chance to watch it yet.

The first time I watched it I had the sound on mute. The beginning of the show looked like he was running for help. He looked like he was in a hurry. The guy looked very scared. He runs into a house and the girl who opened the door look very confused. It then went too a different scene and the guys face looked like he was wondering why anyone would do this. We found out that he found a little boy that was killed. The guy then was walking back through his neighborhood and his neighbors looked concerned for him. From watching it mute there were a lot of different emotions that I saw. I was able to see how everyone is related. 

After I watched the show with the sound on. The emotions that I recognize were correct. I feel that it was not hard to recognize the feelings on mute.Especially since I saw the police and the body of the little boy. Who would not be sad, angry and concerned when there is a body of a little boy. 

I feel that if I watched the show prior to this assignment I would have been more bias in my write up. 

Communication

For this assignment I had to think of a person who has strong communication skills. For this assignment I picked my Priest. He has really strong communications skills for public speaking but also for one one one speaking. He is not forceful to get his point across but he gets his point across in a loving kind way. With being a Priest there are many people that will come to you and tell them their problems. He listens to them and does not judge them. He gives his honest opinion but not in a way to make the person feel stupid and embarrassed. I would want to get some of his communication skills because I have many parents that have to come to me with issues they are having in their home. I would want them to feel that I do not judge them and that I am here to help them get through their trouble time. 

Professional Hopes and Goals

When working with families of different cultures I hope that they all would be interested in learning about each culture. I think it would be neat if we could celebrate each culture. That is why I hope that all families would be interested in other cultures. It would be a great learning experience for their children. One goal that I would like for the early childhood field is for all of us to take a stand. If we all work together we could make diversity,equity and social justice not an issue anymore. 

I want to now take this time to thank off my colleagues for the support they have given me through out this course. I enjoyed reading of your ideas and will take them in to my classroom and in my profession. I look forward to seeing you guys in my other courses. 

With the country becoming more and more diverse teachers need to be more away of different cultures. For this assignment I have to imagine that I am getting a new family from a different country. The country that I have chosen is China. The reason I have picked this country is because I have never had a family from China. 

In order to understand this family and welcome them in to my classroom there are several things that I must do before they start.

1.) Research-I would research the cultural of China. I would look for different things that they believe. I would also get to know more about the country it self and how they handle certain education topics.

2.)Teach-I would teach my current students about China. I would explain to them that everyone has a different way of doing things. I would ask them how they do certain things and then explained how this new child may do things. I would explain just because the child may do things different he still needs to be treated like a friend. 

3.)Integrate-I would integrate some of China's cultural items in the classroom. I would add books, pictures and decorations to make the child feel more at home. 

4.)Talk to family-I would talk to the family to see their cultural views on a variety of topics. Such as education and behavior management. I would talk to them to possible integrate things from home to the classroom for a smooth transition. 

5.)Language- I would try to learn some of the common words in Chinese. Such as Hi, How are you, and bye. I feel this would help bring a stronger relationship to the family. 

By following these step I hope to form a great relationship with the family. I hope that my other students would also learn about the culture. 

The Personal Side of Bias, Prejudice, and Oppression

One of my favorite movies is The Bind Side. The Blind Side is a great example of Bias, Prejudice and Oppression. The movie is about an African American boy in high school. He does not have a family at the beginning of the movie. He has a mother but the mother was never there for him. He moved to one friends house to the streets. He went to a private school because the school wanted him on there sports team. A wealthy family took him in and started treating him like he was their son. There was a lot of people who were rude to the whole family. They were rude because the wealthy family was white and the boy was black. The family friends thought they were doing it for publicity. 

If you ever watch this movie you will see a lot of bias, prejudice and oppression. 

One of the biggest moment that I remember was when the teachers were in the teacher lounge talking about how "stupid" he was. That he will not be able to play sports because people like him never do good in school. Those teachers were not treating him equally because he was a large black student in a heavily white populated white private school. They categorized him at stupid because of where he came from...the projects (low income housing).

During this movie I felt so many emotions. I was sad, happy, and proud just to name a few. 

I am not sure if I would be able to change this situation. I could try to help it by educating those who live in the projects to they can reach their full potential. Those children in the projects are not stupid they just are not privileged enough to have effective teachers and also effective supplies because of the schools budget.
